Venturing – Start a new activity & facing risk
Are you working on creating a new hardware product? Or do you consider to partake/invest in an existing start- or scale-up? Ché knows these are no easy journeys, and full of risk. The good news: You are not alone! Ché can probably help you to find answers to your questions and reduce those risks to workable levels.
It is nice to meet you! Some call me Ché, but my actual name is Ernst. I have experienced what it takes to venture from zero-to-one in the (high-)tech field. Combining my background in physics, biotech and engineering with my track record in entrepreneurship, commercialization, team work and my extensive network, I’m positive I can bring value to the table.
Below you can find my focus areas and services. Nonetheless, nothing is cast in concrete, right? And I always love a complex challenge! Curious? Let’s meet!
Areas of expertise
Agriculture & food
Pharma & biotech
Photonics

New hardware technologies enable the transformation of high-impact sectors such as our food system, health system and the way we collect and interpret information. Providing a vast network and deep in-house knowledge in each of these fields, Ché can rapidly shift from on-boarding to adding real-world value. Explore the focus areas below.
Agri-Food
In the Agri-Food domain new technologies both upstream (algae, (solid-state)fermentation, novel functional ingredients, bioreactor design, no-till cultivation, indoor farming, etc.) and downstream (texturization, hybridization, functional integration, new product formulations, etc.) create opportunities to mitigate emerging issues in the food chain. Having co-founded a food-tech company, I can help you to understand the dynamics in this complex sector and formulate the most promising route to impact!
Pharma-Biotech
Noting trends of increasing chronic diseases, antibiotic resistance, new viral threats and growing life expectancy, health is a key issue world-wide. For example, the recent unexpected success of semaglutide shows that, even outside the medical domain, pharmaceuticals and new therapies can solve real-world problems. Having worked with many tissue engineering, regenerative medicine and stem-cell researchers, I can speak the pharmaceutical language and develop strategies with you that work in this highly specific niche.
Photonics
Photons (light) can carry much more information than electrons, however have a completely different set of characteristics. Applying photons in any measurement, (bio)sensing or mathematical task is complex. Moreover, the photonics field is emerging, with new technologies sprouting on a global scale and investments ramping up over recent years. The key question is: where will these technologies find their killer application? Having experienced an early-stage photonics start- and scale-up and successfully expanding their products globally, this is another sweet-spot that I enjoy working in!
Services
Ché’s specialized services are designed to enable ambitious ventures and technology initiatives to move from start-up stage to commercial stage. We help existing teams to navigate the challenges of developing, scaling & commercializing new hardware-based products. Also, we advise investment firms on new technology propositions. Discover all services below.
Interim Technology Leadership
Applying a strong product-focus, developing hardware teams and solving critical bottlenecks. Based on mutual trust and understanding, Ché can help your company navigate critical phases in technology maturation. In-sync with developing a technology, a team and organizational structure also needs to grow. Ché brings a combined approach based on real-world experience to the table.
New Technology Market Exploration
You have a groundbreaking technology that evidently surpasses current market standards, so what’s holding you back from generating those six-or-more digit revenues? Possibly a lot! Through hardship I know customers will not knock your door automatically. To help you, I developed a step-by-step approach to validate the commercial potential of new technologies, and get your ideal customer(s) on board!
Product Development
A technology is -almost always- not a product. Universities, corporates or founders waving with new ideas, prototypes and IP do not always foresee the yourney ahead how to transform technologies into marketable products. This is where your Product Development Strategy comes into play. No lengthy documents, just a well-thought, workable approach on working towards building great products. Sounds simple, right? Let’s get working!
Crafting Investment Thesis
Who doesn’t love a clever bit of hardware technology? However, reality is that most of hardware-based technology products carry a high risk and require to make investments ahead of generating revenues. Due to this nature, a clear foreward-looking thesis must be created in which risks are reduced to a minimum. You can look into a crystal ball, but Ché knows better ways to underpin your assumptions!
Technology Validation for Investors
The advantage of having in-depth experience in the start-up and scale-up domain is that I can see through the cracks of promising technology theses. A tech review cannot be done fully remote, it requires a true deep-dive in a companies’ team, strategy, IP, prototypes and designs. Excellent teamwork and organizational learning ability are key factors in engineering. Providing in-depth knowledge and investigative rigour, Ché believes complete disclosure is the ideal substrate for future growth.
Industrial Partnerships
Not invented here? Open innovation program? Corporates usually struggle with innovation as their internal workings are designed around operational excellence. Innovation requires a different breeding ground. A good mutual understanding allows to form unique partnerships based on equality, despite differences in organizational size. Ché knows that this can bring huge mutual benefits and loves to work with you to achieve the deal of a lifetime!

Short Bio Ernst Breel (Ché)
Starting up new businesses is in my DNA. During my studies Physics with track Science, Business & Innovation, I’ve worked at various high-tech spin-off companies in physics and life sciences.
After my studies I joined newly-formed Optics11, a high-tech photonics company and VU University spin-off. As early-stage employee I was able to help the company grow from near-zero revenue to profitability, and grow to 50 people in size.
Next, I co-founded Rival Foods, a food-tech company that emerged out of a research line of Wageningen University & Research. We developed a completely new technology from benchtop size to industrial scale, built a strong team of 20 people and successfully raised a Series A investment.
Today I combine my experiences to help other start- and scale-up companies succeed in bringing new technologies to market.
